This airport is the scheduled airline that is nearest to the United States Army Fort McCoy base, which is close to Sparta, Wisconsin. Concerning commercial traffic, it is the sixth busiest airport in Wisconsin. The expansion and general well-being of the economy are directly tied to the airport's performance.

The La Crosse Regional Airport has been around for a long time and has a fascinating past. The airport opened its doors in March 1947 and was initially established under La Crosse Municipal Airport. It can be found in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, in the United States, five nautical miles northwest of La Crosse Wisconsin. The airport is located in the northern portion of French Island, immediately adjacent to the Mississippi River. The regularly scheduled airline airport is located in the closest proximity to the Fort McCoy base in the vicinity of Sparta, Wisconsin.

Because of the expansion of services offered by the airport, its name was officially changed to La Crosse Regional Airport in August 2013. It was classified as a non-hub primary commercial service facility in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2023–2027.
